Reviews about Farzi (2023):

Raj and DK’s characters are never black or white. Be it Sunny, who is the anti-hero of the series, or Michael, who is unlike any cop you might have come across on screen. Neither of them are totally black or white. If Sunny is humane despite greed overtaking his mind, Michael doesn’t mind using counterfeit currency to buy happiness for his child or even blackmailing a minister to get his work done.

The writers have done a brilliant job here with meticulously etched-out characters and a gripping plot. A special shout-out to the dialogue writer too. The entire series is full of seeti maar dialogues. Exchanges between Vijay Sethupathi and Zakir Hussain are hilarious.

Farzi boasts of an amazing cast. Shahid Kapoor has knocked it out of the park this time. As Sunny the artist, he would surely earn quite a lot of fans with his art here. While he played a scammer 12 years ago in Badmaash Company, the actor is more consistent with his performance now. Vijay Sethupathi, who we have seen play cops before, is remarkable as Michael, a cop who, in his words, is ‘not loyal to the government but his work’. We are glad Sethupathi himself spoke in the series and his voice was not dubbed. It’s fun to hear him mouth dialogues in broken Hindi and even more fun when he hurls out expletives. It makes his character more relatable and genuine.

Mansoor’s character might not be something out of the box, but Kay Kay Menon’s gangster act is top class. Bhuvan Arora, who has earlier been seen in The Test Case and Naam Shabana, wins hearts with his performance as Firoz. On the other hand, Raashii Khanna is convincing as a counterfeit currency expert. Her role starts off well but seems to phase out towards the second half. Zakir Hussain easily slips into the character of Pawan Gehlot. There’s nothing new in the role, but Zakir makes sure you do not forget him.

With 8 episodes of 55-60 minutes each, Farzi is an intriguing watch, but with too much detailing, it tends to get exhausting in parts. Although the show manages to keep its viewers hooked till the end, the makers could have easily avoided getting into the details of printing a counterfeit currency note.

The makers have kept the series open-ended, so viewers can expect Farzi Season 2 in the future.

After Rohit Shetty’s cop universe and YRF’s spy universe, we might now have Raj and DK’s spy universe. The series hints at it with Vijay Sethupathi’s Michael collaborating with a certain undercover agent from Raj and DK’s espionage world. While they would solve crimes together, they would also have a lot to talk over a few drinks with all the expletives flying across the room. It would be no less interesting than watching Pathaan meet Tiger, we say.
